BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/ bcr-2012-006867 DESCRIPTION A young woman presented with three pulmonary nodules identified in the right lower lobe discovered on an outside CT scan of the abdomen which was performed to investigate right flank pain. The pain was ascribed to urinary tract infection and resolved over the next few days. These lesions were not present on a CT scan obtained 3 years before. A dedicated CT of the chest confirmed the lesions which were between 1.8 and 2.5 cm in size and located along the diaphragm (figure 1A). No mediastinal lymphadenopathy or other lung lesions were identified. Initially a CT-guided biopsy of one of the lesions was planned; however, the radiologist raised the suspicion that these might represent liver parenchyma herniated through the diaphragm. Subsequently a sulfur colloid scan was performed (5.5 mCi technetium 99 IV) and planar as well as single-photon emission CT (SPECT)-CT images were obtained (figure 1 B-H). SPECT-CT images identified three soft tissue nodules on CT near the right lung base at the posterior right liver dome

Automated classification of pulmonary nodules through a retrospective analysis of conventional CT and two-phase PET images in patients undergoing biopsy
Objective(s): Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) examination is commonly used for the evaluation of pulmonary nodules since it provides both anatomical and functional information. However, given the dependence of this evaluation on physician’s subjective judgment, the results could be variable. The purpose of this study was to develop an automated scheme for the classific...
متن کاملThe pathologic spectrum of gastrointestinal and hepatic histoplasmosis.
We characterized the pathologic spectrum of lesions in gastrointestinal and hepatic histoplasmosis by studying cases of disseminated disease in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients from endemic and nonendemic areas. We evaluated 56 specimens from 52 patients with H&E and silver stains. Of these patients, 43% presented with gastrointestinal rather than pulmonary symptoms. Thirty-one pe...

متن کاملThe Value of LDH Level of BAL Fluid in Differentiating Benign from Malignant Solitary Pulmonary Nodules
Background: Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentration is an indicator for tissue injury. It may be secreted locally in many conditions. For the first time, this study was performed to investigate the value of LDH level in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in differentiation of benign from malignant single pulmonary nodules (SPNs) and to assess its relationship with serum LDH levels. Met...
متن کاملPulmonary nodules in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis: Which diagnostic approach is the most appropiate?
Background: Pulmonary nodular excavation should firstly evoke tuberculosis or necrosis broncho-pulmonary tumor, particularly: epidermoid carcinoma. The case discussed here illustrated these difficulties in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Case Presentation: A 63-year-old woman was presented with a-three-year history of RA and a recent discovery of an excavated pulmonary nodule. Initi...
متن کاملA New Computer-Aided Detection System for Pulmonary Nodule in CT Scan Images of Cancerous Patients
Introduction: In the lung cancers, a computer-aided detection system that is capable of detecting very small glands in high volume of CT images is very useful. This study provided a novelsystem for detection of pulmonary nodules in CT image. Methods: In a case-control study, CT scans of the chest of 20 patients referred to Yazd Social Security Hospital were examined. In the two-dimensional and ...
